The pencil bait is a hard lure characterized by an elongated body and the absence of a lip.

Pencil baits are generally worked with light twitches or a steady retrieve punctuated by pauses, generating a straight or subtly undulating surface swim. This action can trigger strikes when predators are wary or reluctant to react to more pronounced animations.

In freshwater, these lures can be used to target predators positioned near the surface, particularly in calm or shallow areas. In saltwater, they are well suited for bass fishing and other coastal species, from the shore or from a boat, when conditions favour a subtle presentation.
