Which spinning reel should you choose?

Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod — that is, a reel that will balance the rod but also allow you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

Spool diameter

For a spinning reel, the spool diameter is an important point — it must be matched to the size and position of the first ring on the rod. The larger the butt guide, the larger the spool diameter needs to be. The further the guide is from the reel seat, the larger the reel should be.

The ratio

Another important point is the retrieve ratio. A standard ratio is 75–80 cm of line retrieved per handle turn. You will therefore need to choose the ratio of your reel based on the fishing techniques you intend to use.
