The fly lines for fly fishing, a central element of this fascinating fishing technique. There are many different types: natural lines, synthetic lines, floating lines, sinking lines, etc. Each has specific properties that make it suited to a particular fishing technique, fish species or type of environment.

Which fly line to choose?

The fly line must be adapted to the environment, the target species and the technique used. It will therefore depend directly on the equipment used (rod power, reel size, fly type, etc.). 

Type: natural or synthetic?

Choosing between a natural or synthetic fly line depends on your practice.

• - The natural fly line, braided from plant fibres and dressed, wins over anglers with its control, smooth glide, controlled density and excellent floatability in delicate fishing. Ideal for river purists, it requires regular maintenance.
• - The synthetic fly line, made of PVC or modern polymers, offers durability, ease of use and longevity. It is perfectly suited for beginners and reservoir anglers.

Profile

• - The Double Taper (DT) has a profile with both ends tapered and is approximately 30m long. Ideal for short to medium distance casts. 
• - The Weight Forward (WF) has a profile similar to the DT over the first 10 metres, then has a constant thin diameter of approximately 20m called the running line. It allows for long casts easily thanks to the greater weight of the line towards the front.
• - The Level Line (LP) is a fly line of constant diameter, used for short-distance fishing. Rather short, 12-15m, they are perfect for dry fly or nymph fishing.

Density

• - Floating line (F): less dense than water, it floats. It is mainly used for dry fly fishing.
• - Sinking line (S): denser than water, it sinks. Ideal for nymph fishing in deep water. There are different densities and therefore different sink rates (S1 to S5).
• - Intermediate line (I): slightly denser than water, it sinks slowly. Perfect for nymph fishing in shallow water, for example. There are 4 variants: Hover (H), Slow, Medium and Fast, representing the sink rates of the line.
