Which rod + reel combo should you choose?

The rod

• - Lure weight

To choose the right rod, you first need to take into account the weight of the lures you will be casting. The maximum weight must not exceed the rod's intended casting range.

• - Rod length

Then, regarding length, a vertical rod will tend to be shorter in order to stay within the sonar beam, while a rod for fishing far from the bank will tend to be longer (greater casting distance, obstacle clearance, etc.).

The reel

• - Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod — one that will balance the rod but also allow you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

• - The bearings

For a casting reel, the key factor is the spool's rotation capacity. The smoother the rotation and the lower the rotational resistance, the farther you will be able to cast and with lighter lure weights. It is therefore important to look closely at the number and quality of the bearings in the reel.

• - The ratio

Another important point is the retrieve ratio. A standard ratio delivers 75–80 cm of line per handle turn. You should therefore choose the ratio of your casting reel based on the fishing techniques you wish to use.
