Big Bait reels, cast XXL lures to catch XXL fish

Designed to cast XXL lures, baitcasting reels of the big bait type feature spools with capacity suited to heavy braided lines, are equipped with a powerful drag, and have an internal mechanism allowing you to handle pike, catfish, and other record fish. Which reel to choose for Big Bait?

Spinning or casting?

Although it is possible to fish with large lures using a spinning setup, a casting reel offers many advantages. Being able to directly control the spool rotation allows you to place the lure with greater precision and stealth. Powered casts are more comfortable and avoid hurting your index finger (the finger that holds the line at the moment of casting).

Rod balance

Choose a reel suited to your rod, meaning a reel that will balance the rod, but also one that will allow you to cast the lures intended for the rod's power rating.

Bearings

For a casting reel, the crucial point is the spool's rotation capacity. The smoother the rotation and the lower the resistance to rotation, the farther you will be able to cast and with lighter lure weights. You should therefore pay close attention to the number and quality of the bearings in the reel.

Gear ratio

Another important point is the gear ratio. A standard ratio is 7.1:1, meaning 75-80cm of line retrieved per handle turn. You will therefore need to choose your reel's gear ratio based on the fishing techniques you wish to use.
