How to choose a soft lure?
Colour
When it comes to colour, the starting point is the environment. The clearer it is, the more natural colours you should use; the more turbid it is, the more flashy or dark shades — even black — you should go for. This is a baseline that will need to be adjusted day by day.
Vibration
When it comes to vibration, the noisier the environment, the more you need your lure to be noticed, and the more you'll want to emit vibrations through appendages or a more or less pronounced tail. The stiffness of the lure's rubber will also play a role. The calmer the environment, the more you can use discreet lures and slow animations.
Size
Size will also be a key factor. In general, the colder the water, the larger the lure you should use. However, you also need to take into account the size of the prey and adapt your choice based on what you can see below the surface and the target species.
Classic sizes by species:
- - Perch: 3 to 8cm
- - Zander: 5 to 12cm
- - Pike: 10 to 20cm
- - Sea bass: 8 to 14cm
These tips are just a starting point, and if you're not getting any bites or follows, don't hesitate to think outside the box!
