A minimalist technique of fearsome effectiveness

The Ned Rig is an ultra-refined and terribly effective fishing approach, imported from the United States. It relies on a specific jig head featuring a flat or bevelled base, which keeps the lure standing upright on the bottom. This rig perfectly imitates a small fish or crustacean sitting motionless, ready to dart — an irresistible signal for lethargic predators. The Ned jig head acts here as a pivot: it stabilises the lure while amplifying the micro-vibrations transmitted through the rod.

A slow and precise presentation, right along the bottom

The Ned Rig is fished with small soft lures (2 to 4 inches) of the stickbait, creature or worm type, mounted on a light head (2 to 7 g). The retrieve is minimalist: let the lure touch the bottom, wait, lift it slightly, then let it fall back. It is this alternation of pauses and micro-movements that triggers the bite. Ideal for inactive fish or during cold periods, this rig is particularly deadly for zander, perch and bass, whether on canals, lakes or gravel areas.

The Ned head: a design built for balance

The flat-based shape of the Ned jig head allows the lure to remain upright even when stationary, which extends the attraction zone. The most refined models, offered by brands such as BKK or Reins, combine a fine yet strong hook, an ideal weight distribution and sometimes a weedguard coating. Some even incorporate a discreet keeper barb, preventing the lure from sliding while preserving its suppleness. This attention to detail ensures a clean, realistic and stable presentation — a decisive advantage for the success of the rig.

A technique for fishing differently

The appeal of the Ned Rig lies in its versatility. It can be fished from the bank or from a boat, vertically, on a slow straight retrieve or by dragging. Its slow pace and precision make it a go-to tool for difficult fishing situations, when fish refuse conventional retrieves. It allows you to work a zone thoroughly, triggering reflex or curiosity bites and taking advantage of the slightest vibration.
