On the RIO Tarpon Pro:
Why two diameters? Take, for example, the 60 lb shock and 40 lb class leader
- 40 lb class tippet: this is the calibrated section of the leader. It is designed to be the setup's controlled weak point. Under excessive tension, this section is supposed to break first.
- 60 lb shock tippet: this is the section located just before the fly. It is stronger and, above all, thicker to withstand abrasion, especially friction against the tarpon's very hard, abrasive mouth.
So, schematically: fly line → leader → 40 lb class tippet → 60 lb shock tippet → fly.
Having 60 lb ahead of 40 lb is intentional: the 60 lb protects against fish abrasion, while the 40 lb primarily determines the setup's maximum strength. Thus, your setup does not actually become a true "60 lb" rig: its breaking strength is mainly limited by the 40 lb class tippet.
