The landing net, the angler's best friend.

Landing a trout on the fly and then sliding it into the landing net is always a safe way to end a fight. Ardent Fly Fishing offers a house-brand landing net designed by its team of enthusiasts.

Which landing net to choose?

Handle length

The length should be adapted to your environment

Wading: a short handle will be perfect, as you are closest to the fish. If you are targeting large specimens or fishing in very large rivers, a longer handle can be an advantage.
Bank or boat: the further you are from the water, the longer your landing net handle needs to be. If space is an issue, telescopic and/or folding models will be an advantage.

The size of the "frame"

The size of the frame or head will be directly related to the potential size of the fish you are targeting. In a small river with 20cm trout, a 30 by 40cm head is perfect. If you are targeting pike or salmon, a head of at least 50 by 60cm is recommended.

Net type and depth

Transparent rubber: ideal for discretion, fish welfare and preventing hooks from getting tangled inside. Slower passage through the water due to resistance. It dries very quickly and retains very little odour.

Rubber-coated mesh: great for fish welfare and preventing hooks from getting tangled inside. The smaller the mesh, the slower the passage through the water due to resistance. It dries very quickly and retains little odour.
Nylon: very discreet in the water, it is inexpensive. Hooks can get tangled in it. Widely used at sea. It dries very quickly and retains very little odour.

Folding or fixed?

If bulk is not an issue, a fixed landing net will be perfect. If size does matter, then you should look towards a folding and/or telescopic version.

Other key points

A floating landing net can be a real asset, particularly for keeping the fish while you prepare the souvenir photo or to give it time to recover.

Advice from our team of enthusiasts

Handling the fish

A landing net is the best way to handle your fish safely while keeping it in the water. Rubber-coated mesh protects the fish's mucus while making it easier to untangle a fly that has caught inside.

Landing net care

Remember to rinse and dry your landing net thoroughly after each outing to extend its lifespan.

If you have any questions about choosing a rod, the rigs suited to your fishing area, or the type of fly line (floating, sinking, etc.) to fit on your reel, don't hesitate to contact us via our website, by phone, or by visiting us in person at our Ardent Fly Fishing shop.
