Deer ear dubbing is a blend obtained from hairs taken from the ears of deer and hare dubbing. These hairs, coarser and hollow compared to those of the hare, produce a dubbing with a rustic character, both light and highly buoyant.
The hollow fibers of deer hair, filled with air, provide excellent buoyancy, making it a particularly suitable material for tying the thoraxes of dry flies and emergers. Its slightly rigid texture and natural color contribute to a realistic appearance, while ensuring good performance on the water.
Deer ear dubbing can be used pure to add volume and lift to a fly, or combined with other dubbings (such as hare or antron) to adjust texture or sparkle depending on the type of imitation desired.
It is highly recommended to use it in a dubbing loop, i.e. between two tying threads. This technique helps to keep the hairs in place and better control their distribution, while avoiding bulk.
This dubbing stands out for its natural appearance and effectiveness in tying patterns requiring lightness, floatation and rusticity, qualities sought after for many traditional dry flies and emergers.
