A fly line designed to cast the largest pike flies
Whether you use a powerful single-handed rod or a two-handed rod for greater distance and efficiency, this range offers different tapers and densities to maximize your chances of success. Because after the hundreds, or even thousands, of casts it can take to trigger a strike, every detail matters.
The RIO Elite Musky Outbound Custom T-27 is a rather specialized version: it is primarily intended for heavy two-handed rods and very large streamers, with the option to match the fly line’s weight precisely to the rod.
Features
- A short, front-loaded head lets you cast long lengths of line with minimal false casting.
- Type 5 sinking heads paired with an intermediate running line get large unweighted flies down quickly into the strike zone and keep them there throughout the retrieve.
- A thick-diameter running line provides a better grip and greater control when casting, retrieving, and setting the hook with a strip strike (strip strike).
- The 11 wt and 12 wt versions are ideal for the most powerful single-handed predator rods.
- The 600-grain and T-27 versions are designed to cast the largest flies with two-handed rods.
- The T-27 version is rather specialized: it is primarily intended for heavy two-handed rods and very large streamers, with the option to match the fly line’s weight precisely to the rod.
The T-27 comes from the factory with a 30 ft / 9.1 m head weighing 810 grains, or about 52.5 g. Unlike a standard WF line, this head is designed to be cut back: anglers can shorten it gradually to achieve exactly the right head weight for their rod.
In practice, you start with a very heavy 810-grain head and cut it back to the optimal weight. For example, if a two-handed rod performs best at around 650–700 grains, you shorten the T-27 to reach that range.
The T-27 also has a very dense, heavy head. It is designed to cast very large pike or musky streamers and get them down quickly, while keeping them in the right part of the water column throughout the retrieve.
In short:
- WF11/WF12: heavy single-handed rods
- 600 gr : two-handed rods, with a ready-to-fish line weight
- Custom T-27 : a very powerful option for two-handed rods that can be cut back to match the head weight precisely to the rod.
